Starting your own Business

Thursday 27 January 2011
From the lectures we've been to every Wednesday I've learned a lot about starting your own business and the possibility of freelancing in industry. We were asked in one of the lectures if we had a skill we could offer in the possibility of us persuing the idea of freelance work. Since really thinking about what I'm wanting to do in the future (hopefully concept artist), I've thought about the skills I want to develop and how I'm going to do it.
I found the lecture on intellectual property particularly interesting because I didn't actually know that once you made something it was automatically copyrighted to you. I just assumed that unless you sent off a lot of complicated forms someone could just freely come along and steal your work, afterall, it happens all the time on the internet. I've seen many artists talk about how their work was being used on merchandise all around the world without their consent. Obviously they weren't happy about it. It made me think about how important work is to people, how important ideas are to people, and whether I had any ideas of my own I'd like to pursue.
I've been thinking a lot lately about my future, where I want to be and what reality actually has in store for me. I've been thinking I'll probably end up working in a job that I don't like, as I'm sure around 80% of the population does, while doing art on the side, maybe get a few commissions here and there, a few small jobs. I don't think I've been very positive lately, have I?
